Going for Gold, joint Olympic celebration at Dulwich Picture Gallery and Herne Hill Velodrome Sunday 24 June 2012, 11:00am to 5:00pm
As many of you may know, the track was renovated and resurfaced by British Cycling in August 2011. Cyclist attendance is booming and the Friends of HHV has been set up. Southwark Council awarded HHV Trust £400k for cycling improvements at HHV, from their Olympic Legacy Project (SOLP).
'Going for Gold' is a joint festive day with Dulwich Picture Gallery, to celebrate HHV as the last remaining finals venue from the 1948 London Olympics. To encourage walking between the two sites, the south end of Burbage Road, from Turney Road to Gallery Road, will be closed to motor vehicles, with cycle processions from HHV to DPG and back.
Veteran-cycle owners are bringing their treasures to ride in the V-CC and Wheels for Wellbeing procession at 11.30am. Then, a display of cycles to the visitors in the Old Grammar School field, beside the Gallery, and riding back to HHV at 2.30pm, led by 1948 Olympic double bronze-medallist, Tommy Godwin, and his track team colleague, Jim Love, followed by children in 'Olympic Spirit' fancy dress.
At the Gallery, there will be an array of entertainments, refreshment stalls and free entry to the permanent Picture Collection, plus cycling talks, film and memorabilia in the Linbury Room there, 12 noon to 4:00pm, with Tommy Godwin and Wally Happy speaking, 12 noon to 1:00pm. The Brixton Super Madison Meeting will be on at HHV, 1:00pm to 5:00pm. It should be a fun day! Hope to see you on Sunday 24 June
