The Spring 2012 edition of the award-winning Herne Hill magazine is now out. This time the cover features a drawing of the maze in Ruskin Park by Stuart Brown.

Members of the Society should receive their copy by the end of this week. Inside are news and articles on

Walter Bor Media Awards

At the Walter Bor Media Awards last night, the Herne Hill Society was presented with a 'commended' award for the Short History of Herne Hill and a 'highly commended' award for Herne Hill magazine.

 
Particular thanks are due to Nick Baker, who redesigned our magazine last year and also designed and produced the book from John Brunton's text.
 
The winner of both the newsletter award AND the website award was the Sydenham Society - so our sincere congratulations go to them.

The Hackney Society won the book award.

Lambeth Country Show 2011

Under what is politely called 'inclement weather conditions', this year's Lambeth Country Show started slowly with stall-holders cowering inside their tents, or under anything with a roof.

Anyone watching the Open on the telly would have known what to expect.

But in the afternoon there was (briefly) a dramatic improvement, and a surprisingly good turnout.

More torrential rain at about 6 pm led to an authentic festival experience, with great music at the main arena - albeit with surprisingly little mud. Everybody say 'Yeh yeh'.

On  the Society stand, we had a very busy afternoon, selling 47 copies of our brand-new Short History of Herne Hill.

A Short History of Herne Hill

We're now printing our latest book, which we plan to have ready for the Lambeth Country Show (16-17 July).

 
People keep telling us that they want a short, informal (and, frankly, inexpensive) book about their beloved local area. Since The Herne Hill Heritage Trail went out of print, there's been nothing to sell!

Hence this brand new, illustrated 44-page paperback, with text by our ex-Vice-Chair John Brunton.

To the west is Brixton, to the east is Dulwich, and Tulse Hill is to the south.  However there are no specific boundaries to Herne Hill. The London SE24 postal district is a good fit. But there are people living in SE21, SE5 or SW2 who would also identify with Herne Hill. So if you think you live in Herne Hill, you probably do!
